| The experimental data base is made
of 6,205 measurements, quite equally distributed over the six towns, composed
of 3,147 environmental data, 1,559 and 1,499 personal exposure and home
pollution data, respectively.
Due tue the innovative methodological approach, it has been possible to draw higly space-resolved isolevel maps of benzene concentration on each of the monitored towns, providing the public administration a powerful decisional tool for the planning of traffic and road network. |

| high
spatial resolution in
urban monitoring discovers information that would remain unapproachable by the traditional monitoring techniques, based on time- resolved measurements in a few points in the town |
|
| Example of isolevel concentration maps obtained from the experimental data of the January '98 in Padova. Tha stars locate the sampling points. This kind of colour scale representation is a powerful tool for city planning, putting into evidence the directions along which pollution spreads. |
The low costs of the operation are also greatly interesting.
The optimum sampling grid is composed of 125 points each 100 square km
of territory, approximately corresponding to a town with 300,000-400,000
inhabitants. An entire sampling campaign involves overall costs for about
6,000 Euros, including 2,000 Euros for the purchase of samplers along with
their shelters, 2,500 Euros for laboratories analyses and about 1,500 Euros
for personnel employed at the beginning of the campaign for placing the
samplers and at its end for gathering them.
This means that, if one plans to monitor a town
for twelve measurement campaigns in a year, the overall cost is lower than
72,000 Euros: this is equal to the purchase and running costs for one year
for only one automated continuous instrument!
