Prof. GIOVANNI BATTISTA MIGLIORI, MD was born in Sondrio (Italy) on June 26th, 1960.

Training

Graduated "Summa cum Laude" on 18.10.1985 (experimental thesis on the "Activity of a new Macrolide on respiratory pathogens").
Postgraduate course on Tropical Medicine (CUAMM, Padova, 1986-7)
Speciality in Respiratory Medicine (1989) and Medical Statistics (1995).

Professional activities

May 1987 - August 1989: responsible, with the framework of the Health Cooperation Project of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, of the Tuberculosis (TB) and AIDS Control Programmes in Arua District, West Nile, Northern Uganda (the Programme implemented the TB control at Regional level, and the recording and reporting system for epidemiological and health planning purposes as a part of the new Ugandan National Health Information System).
Since October 1989: Consultant Chest Physician at the Department of Pneumonology, Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri, Care and Research Institute, Tradate, Italy, in charge of the Cell Biology Laboratory and of the Clinical Trials within the framework of GCP.
Since 1995: Consultant of the World Health Organization (in charge of TB control activities in Russia, Romania, Ukraine, Moldova, Turkey, Kossovo, Estonia and Mozambique). He was involved in TB Control in prisons in Ivanovo Oblast and Romania, in cost-effectiveness evaluation in Russia, Italy and Estonia.
Since October 2000, Director of the WHO Collaborating Centre for Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases and since July 2003 Head of the Clinical Epidemiology Service of Respiratory Disease, Fondazione Salvatore Maugeri, Care & Research Institute, Tradate, Italy
Since May 2001: consultant for the European Community in Ukraine (TACIS programme)

Research Activities

1987-1989: research project on TB diagnosis in pediatrics, TB control, and AIDS/TB related infections in Uganda
He is presently coordinating several national and international research projects in the field of TB and asthma control for the Italian Ministry of Health, the World Health Organization and the IUATLD (International Union Against Tuberculosis and Lung Disease).
Since 1998 coordinator of the surveillance project for drug resistance in tuberculosis (Ministry of Health, Rome, Italy)
Since 1990 investigator in clinical trials (Asthma and COPD) within GCP.
Since 2002: member of the PPM and TB/HIV study groups, WHO DOTS Expansion Group, Geneva
Since 2003: member of the TAG (Technical Advisory Group), WHO Euro, Copenhagen

Author of more than 200 scientific publications (original articles, reports, communications, editorials and book chapters, the main part of them published in Index Medicus/Science Citation Index indexed journals) on TB and pulmonary diseases.
